The Bounty of Summer

It's only just Spring, but I am already starting to see the summer bounty making an early appearance.

Peaches in bloom

Fruit on my apricot tree

I've been slowly working on getting my summer garden ready for planting. Over the winter the weeds too hold, with Spring upon us they have spouted up everywhere and now, I have a lot of clearing I have to attend to. I'll also loosen and amend the soil and plan out what is going to go where. I can hardly wait to get my hands dirty and start planting.

Last year, the garden gave us many delicious meals and it's such a treat to go in our backyard, pick ripe produce right off the vine and have it on our dinner table that night. It doesn't get much better than that and a wonderful lesson for The Little Miss. I'm also looking into joining or starting a neighborhood garden exchange. I'd love to be able to trade some of my fruit and veggies with my neighbors who might be growing something I'm not. It would be a great way to meet my neighbors and a wonderful way to get a bigger variety of fresh produce..

What's in your garden this year?

I so wish I had a green thumb. I would starve if I had to grow my own. Tomatoes is about my limit. Have fun with the produce swapping, sounds like likes of fresh fruits and veggies in your future.

Argh...one more reason why I miss living in California! I didn't appreciate the bounty in my backyard (and my neighbor's backyards) enough!

I could plant tomatoes here in Texas, and I should plant basil. Maybe I'll get to the garden center soon and actually DO it!

I don't garden myself, but I'm eager for the return of farmers' markets with their bounty of summer. :)

No garden in my apartment, sighs. I'll have to live vicariously through you!

I'm growing tomatoes and lettuce and various herbs from seed for the first time. I built a nice raised planting bed and I really hope it works! I think trading vegetables with your neighbors is a great idea especially in this economy! I heard on the news that the average garden yields $500 worth of produce per year. I had no idea! Good luck with yours. Keep us posted!

I think it's awesome that you're growing a veggie garden. I would love to, but my backyard is teeny. I love cooking with spices, so I should try growing herbs.

I don't have a green thumb... it's more brown/black. I've even killed cactus's. yeah... that's bad. But I've got a bougainvillea that i haven't killed from last year and 2that have survived since xmas... I've killed 3 in 2 years.
So I'm looking for some hardy seeds to start from this year. Since we don't own our house I don't have a place to do an edible garden at. But I'm going to enjoy trying to keep some things alive this spring into summer.

Good luck on yours. I want to go shopping for some plants now :)

wish I had a garden but no room in our townhome. I always had one growing up though and loved it.

This is year 4 of my husband promising to start a veggie garden (I'm too busy taking care of the lawn and flowers and do not weed well). I do LOVE those home-grown tomatoes. Maybe this year....

I've tried for several years to grow a garden, but the bunnies and deer eat my goods no matter what I have tried!

So I have to suck it up and go to the farmers market!

We also have a nice garden...and it would be wonderful to do a trade with others! Too bad we don't live close to each other...I'd trade with ya!

We have peaches and apricots too! We also have a plum and cherry tree... but we don't get much fruit from them yet!

Hopefully we get some fruit this year after our latest cold snap!
