What Would You Do and I Need Your Opinion

We had Mr. and Mrs. Fire over with their 2 girls over on Sunday for a little afternoon craziness. The girls ran around the backyard doing whatever it is that kids do to entertain themselves. The adults caught up on stuff like, have you found a place to rent and really how much is the insurance going to cover?

So far they have only gotten a check for $600, for living expenses to hold them over until their situation can be further assessed. There will be a lot more money paid out, as in hundreds of thousands of dollars but right to rebuild their house, but for now they are fronting all costs. They were given a work book to list everything that was in the house so they can be given money for the replacement value of it. For example, let’s say you bought a TV 5 years ago for $1000 and to replace that same TV today is $300, the insurance will give you the $300. Can you imagine trying to list everything in your house? Take pictures people. Open your closets, cabinets and drawers and snap a quick photo. It takes a while but in a situation like this, totally worth it.

Here’s the scenario and question of the day…Mrs. Fire went out last week to buy an outfit for a friend’s party, since she basically has only one suit case of clothes. She went out and spent $525 on a pair of shoes, a pair of black pants, a pair of jeans, a blouse and a cardigan.

Would you
A. Splurge because, WTF… I just lost EVERYTHING and deserve to buy my self a little bit of happiness?

B. Be conservative with my money because I just lost EVERYTHING and I there’s a lot of things I’ll need to replace?

And a wedding update (or rather another RANT) and the 2nd question of the day. Now The Bride wants to have another flowergirl along with The Little Miss and wants to co-ordinate dresses for the girls. Should I just bow out of having The Little Miss be a flower girl, since I'm fairly confident she won't walk down the aisle in front of all 200 guests all by herself? The original plan was that if needed, she would walk with her Dad or I would walk with her. I'm leaning toward bowing out. What do you think?

Oh definitely B, but that's just me! I'd be far more interested in getting my house fitted out again than replenishing my wardrobe...

Bowing out might not be a bad idea... She's so young still. There will be other opportunities later...

If I were going to spend $500 I would go to TJ Maxx or somewhere where you could buy 10 outfits for that price. But that's just me!

I would bow out of the flower girl thing unless it's really important to the Little Miss which it doesn't sound like it is! It's less pressure on her and you too!

I agree with Tina, spend whatever, but go to a cheap store and spend whatever. You get a lot more bang for the buck. $525 on clothes is INSANE!!

Bow out. You have been through a lot and I cannot believe she isnt being more sensitive to that fact. You dont need the added stress.

i would never ever spend that much money on one outfit! i feel guilty if i spend 50 dollars! so yeah my answer would be B!

as for the flower girl thing.....hmmm I dont know...how important is it to the bride?

Part B for sure - it's not like the money's going to be rolling in as fast as she's spending it.

As to bridezilla, first I'd tell her to go jump in a lake (that's the polite version). It might be a good idea to pull TLM not only for her benefit but also to save you the additional aggravation of future last minute and totally outrageous requests (and you know they're coming!). I lent my son to my sister Cruella's wedding and have regretted it ever since.

Conserve. I can't imagine spending that much money on clothes regardless of what my situation is!

Came across your blog via Spukysuzi....it's very nice!

I'd definitely have to say B. Not to be rude, but what is she thinking. There are so many things more important then a party. Borrow an outfit, gees.

And I say probably just bow out. If she probably wouldn't walk anyways, this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Hope it all works out.

Hi- I am new to your blog, I have spent the last few days reading it from the very first post forward. I wanted to say congrats on the weight loss and I am very impressed. You seem to have a wonderful balanced life, and it sounds like you are at heart a happy, satisfied person with a happy, satisfied family.

As for this question, I am a "B" person right now with situations in my own life going on. And I would be a "B" person anyhow, the most expensive store I buy clothes and shoes at is Target! I am a purse ho, but other than that I buy whatever fits nicely and whatever I can now afford.

I think also the wedding is turning into one of those episodes you see on TV! I personally hate weddings and similar types of affairs. I did as you did, got married on the beach with just immediate family and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! My answer is ask The Little Miss what she wants to do, if she truly has her heart set on being a flower girl or not. She seems like an intelligent child and she can probably give you an intelligent answer.

Sorry this was so long, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello, and I love your blog and your attitude about life and love, health and harmony.

I'd pick B, there will be time to replace the wardrobe later. With $500 I probably would have found a few outfits with pieces that would mix and match but thats just me.

As for the wedding, I think I'd offer to bow out but only if it won't cause a problems or hurt feelings down the road.

I can understand just wanting some nice things--clothes can be about comfort and security. And sometimes one pair of nicely made jeans is worth it because they hold up for years and you can wear them every day.

She shouldn't spend like that. She is living on the past. A friend of mine had a house fire and was nickel and domed by the insurance company and took more than a year to get the kitchen fixed and they ended up losing much more than they thought could happen.
