Treadmill Theory of Time

I went to the gym yesterday and, my god, an hour on the treadmill seemed to last FOREVER and I'm sure it wasn't just the uber-stinky guy next to me. Although, after he took his sweaty body and walked away I was a much happier girl. I read a couple magazines and watched Oprah about some mother who after having her second child had to have part of both arms and legs amputated due to some viral infection. I was wiping away the tears and must have looked like a total dork... cryin' at the gym, watching Oprah. I finally had to turn to something else cuz I was such a mess.

And just question for you all because I don't really understand. Why is it that an hour on a treadmill seems *so* much longer than an hour walking outside in the real world? Does working out on a treadmill slow time down?

Have a great weekend everyone... I'm road-tripping again, this time solo to San Francisco. I can't wait!

The treadmill is still a novelty to me, so I don't find it seems that long.

However, I only spend 25 minutes on it. Maybe do some work on the cross trainer for 15 minutes and the rowing machine for 5 to cut your treadmill time down to 40 minutes? might make everything seem to go faster.

Id give you my insights but I LEAP off that ^%^% before more than a couple minutes hath passed.

really.

Im all about the outside and, if I cant get out, Id rather march in place than hit the 'mill.

happy weekend!

Yes, yes it does.

I've spent lots of time on the treadmill in the past but I really really prefer being outside. There's so much more to see and think about when you're outside. The treadmill gets boring quick!

Also, a bonus about jogging outside is that you spend so much time focusing on the ground so as not to trip over rocks/dips in the road/dog poop that you don't notice the time going by as much! Now if the treadmill came built with obstacles to dodge, maybe that would be another story... hehe.

In answer to your question...YES! 5 minutes on the treadmill = 20 minutes in real life so in reality you spent 400 minutes on the treadmill so you are my hero!

Since I had started running time one the treadmill goes quickly because I run in increments. But if I was on it for a walking pace for 60 mins, then for sure that would feel like an ETERNITY! Kudos to you. How is the part time schedule going?!

I know what you mean... I would much rather bike for twice as long as sit on an exercise bike. It just seems more like fun and less like work!

I think the same thing every time I get on the stupid thing. I can't make it an hour, but I have worked my way up to 30 minutes and it just about kills me.

.5 is great! congrats to you!!
also i have soooo cried on the treadmill too. too funny! and also, i've had stinky guys next to me, but nothing was as bad as the sweaty guy -- the one on the treadmill who sweats so profusely that he it pours onto the treadmills on both sides of him. which remain empty because it's so gross. sorry! i just had to share. haha!

An hour on the treadmill is longer than an hour walking outside because there is nothing to do but walk. You're not distracted by noises, or smells, or other stuff on a treadmill like you are outside. So you remember that you're walking, walking, walking, and still have forever and a day to go before you're done. I'd much rather walk outside than on a treadmill!

Not sure how the time thing works, but AWESOME you can manage to keep at it for an HOUR! No way could I manage to find the dedication to do that! :-)

I do my walking outside when I can... but then I have too. We don't own a car (by choice) and every place I need to go is walking distance!! or we use public transport and I get off two stops before I need to and walk the rest of the way!!

My gym is a "working gym", so there are no TV's and I must say, I can get pretty bored on the treadmill. So I have to listen to music. There is nothing better than walking outside and I intend to do just that when we move to the USA... It's too dangerous here.

I usually also do an hour, and some days it just seems to drag....I so would rather be on the running trail! Listening to good tunes on the iPod does help a bit...

Good for you for getting to the gym..I have not seen that place or even much physical activity in quite some time. I like the elliptical better..I don't have to do it as long as tm for the same about of calories burned. If I must do the TM, it's gotta be next to someone i can talk to or near a tv that has all my tivo'ed shows on it. Good for you for being active! Still wearing the pedometer? Sounds like things are going great!
